June 4: Tiananmen Crackdown
0:00
On June 4, 1989, Chinese troops cleared Tiananmen Square after weeks of protests, ending a movement for reform. The event still sparks debate over memory and silence today.
Today in history, June 4, 1989: after weeks of student-led demonstrations calling for political reform and an end to corruption, Chinese troops moved into Beijing and cleared Tiananmen Square. The crackdown ended a movement that had filled the square with hunger strikes, speeches, and a towering statue called the Goddess of Democracy. Hundreds, and possibly more, were killed in Beijing as the army advanced through the city. The date still matters because memory itself became part of the struggle: who gets to speak, who is silenced, and what a society is allowed to remember.
